Madkitty Ashley's Journal

16th December, 2004. 10:55 pm. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Well at least in the respect that we finally got the tree. On that note, if you ever wait long enough to buy your tree at Home Depot, they go half off. Yeah for half off trees. For those who have not heard the story before, Rae and I made the discovery that with the Home Depot so close to home, it would make sense to buy the tree there and walk it home. Well the nice people at Home Depot took our idea further and suggested we used one of the carts to take our tree home....and presto a Christmas tradition was born. Tonight we went and picked out our annual Home Depot tree and brought it home by cart. Interestingly while bringing home the tree we ran into (not literally, though we thought about it) a group of Mexicans in what appeared at first to be a caroling session. As they passed by us and our tree two of the members of the group were dressed in garb reminiscent of Joseph and Mary, carrying a platform between them holding the holy navity scene made up of plastic light up figures of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus. The group traveling with them were singing something in Spanish that sounded like a weird cross between Mary Had a Little Lamb and Old McDonald, and several members of the joly band of folks were carrying Pepsi and Diet Pepsi cans filled with something akin to rocks, thus creating a metally maraca sound as they shook them to accompany their meloudious chorus. Needless to say, twas the topic of conversation for much of the rest of the evening. ;)

Work is not too overwhelming this week, and it has helped that I had T, W, and Th off from Best Buy. Finished my final for school today, so now school is done for the sememster, which is good.

Wish my life was more exciting, but I figure you are all so excited just to see me alive that you will forgive my lack of storytelling... ;)

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.

19th November, 2004. 1:21 pm. Time...time..time, see what's become of me....

Well over a year later, here I am finally posting again to my LJ. I figure I should do something with the few free waking seconds I have available to me. :)

For those of you who know, and I guess those who don't as everyone is probably not totally up on my life, life has been insanely busy this last year. I realize this does not excuse me from having kept you all up to date on my life, but please accept my apologies.

I can't believe the end of 2004 is almost upon us. This has been one heck of a year, hasn't it? The last few months of my life have turned into a madcap roller-coaster for me. I decided it was finally time to conquer some debt issues I created back when I was with Lisa, and so here I am working two jobs through winter. For those who had not heard, I am now employed by both Disneyland and the newfound job with Best Buy. Just got my schedules for the two jobs and I am looking at 32 hours with DL and 39.75 hours with Best Buy next week. So once again, don't expect to be seeing me at all in the next week.

I really do miss talking and seeing all of my friends and such, but until things slow down with life, please forgive my absence.

Will try and write more when I can think of things to write...

Ashley

25th August, 2003. 12:16 am. Sing....Sing a Song....Sing it loud...

But I can't think of anything to sing about tonight, but I did not want to break my header trend. ;)

Very bummed to miss Sex in the City tonight, as the invite to mandrakegeek and Ambassador2Hell's place was a standing open invite, but yeah....we were kinda unconcious.

Had planned to do the Bat's Day thing at Disneyland today, but ran into the little problem of lack of needed sleep. See between working Saturday Morning(starting at 6:00a.m., Saturday Night (until 11:30p.m.), then getting back up this morning to work again for Breakfast, aparently something broke down in the body and knocked me out when I came home today. Did anyone go into the park and see the pretty people? Just curious to hear about the turn out.

Met some uber-cool Goth's last night after my wonderful friends came and visited me for dinner (you know who you are), and I hope you enjoyed your meal.

Regarding the shin-dig, it is tenatively planned for Sunday afternoon, just have one possible snag, that might be the day the new roomie moves in....so will update shortly.

Current mood: here.
Current music: Theme song to Dharma and Greg.

22nd August, 2003. 1:06 am. "A Pirate's Life is a wonderful life....."

Wow, it's been like ten days since I've posted. Which is weird because I have been online much more than that, I guess I just haven't thought much to come type anything.

Regarding the quote, Rae is watching The Crimson Pirate, which we were watching earlier, but she fell asleep through, so she is watching it again.

For those curious, my faith in movies has slightly improved haven recently watched Spy Kids 2, The Hours, and The Crimson Pirate all of which I enjoyed. I also saw About Schmidt, which I neither liked nor disliked.

Rae and I spent the day in Disneyland today, which was nice, because we haven't done that in awhile. The weather was finally such that I wasn't dying while in the resort.

For those who care, I am serving at night at Hook's Pointe this Saturday and the following Friday. Don't know if any of you want to come experience me as a night server, but there you are. :)

I have been having these crazy cravings for chocolate for the last few days. Beginning to wonder if I am pregnant......

Apartment is finally clean and enterable, so I want to have a big shindig....anyone in the mood for a party? IF so, when is good for all of you?

Okay, that's it, unexciting I know, but it's a start.

12th August, 2003. 9:56 pm. We can be cold as our falling thermometers in December.....

But we don't care if you're black in the middle of 1912 Iowa.

Okay, strange rant, that might seem offensive and I will accept any of you disagreeing with me on this point, but I have an issue with something that I see occuring regularing in Musical theatre as well as other aspects of entertainment. Color-blind casting.

Now don't get me wrong on this point, I don't disagree with the basic concept of it. In fact, in most cases I really think it works out splendidly, ie: Cinderella starring Brandy in 1997, where the cast was completely interacial. But the reason I think it worked fine is because Cinderella is a fairytale, not set in any point in time/history, thus there is no need to worry about what color/race/etc. anybody is, because it is a complete ficional reality. However, after just watching the Music Man remake with Matthew Broederick (which by the way was just painfully bad anyway), I really feel there is a problem with some of the color-blind casting occuring out there.

I'm sorry, but Music Man takes place in a little town in Iowa in 1912. To those who know their history, 1912 Iowa was not a happily integrated town where black folks were upstanding members of the community who went prancing around town in dressy clothes singing along with the rest of the townspeople. Now yes, i realize this is a musical and not based in true reality, but I really feel it does a diservice to history and what happened in this country, by having interacial casts in historically placed plays/musicals/movies. It is totally glossing over the reality of the times these stories take place and make the accuracy to the time frame completely out of whack.

This same discussion came up between me and Rae after watching 42nd Street a few weeks ago at the Ahmanson. In this 1936 based story that was taking place on Broadway in New York. the story very much is focused around the time frame of reference in American History, yet in our cast we had 5 characters being played by black actors/actresses: 4 chorus line girls and the Dance Captain/choregrapher guy. Both Rae and I were seriously bothered by this, as historically there is not a chance in Hades there would have been ANY black chorus dancers, much less a black Dance Captain. I mean come on, at this same time in history many Black greats were having to be shuffled in and out the backdoors of the places they were performing. I think by just glossing over this fact in the casting of this revival of 42nd street, is an injustice to those great legends who were just struggling to get to perform and be recognized as people at this point in history.

Now please do not misunderstand me, if you know me well, you should know I am far from racist, but this issue really strikes a frustrated bone in my body. And it's not like in these situtations the casting director seemed to care to be so color-blind that they went and cast say Asian actors, Latino actors, Indian actors, etc. etc. etc. It always seems like in these situtations that this casting is almost like a direct attempt to put a blatant sign on the shows that says "Look we all live in this perfectly utopian society where blacks and whites play together in harmony", while directly glossing over reality and completely igorning ever other damn color of skin.

I don't know how everyone else views these kind of things, but I just know I am really really tired of it, and know I am powerless to stop any of it.

While I am on the point of ranting, whose damn bloody idea was it to re-make a great movie like The Music Man in the first place. Why do people consistently take a great great thing and try to make something "different". I am sorry, but I really tried to give this new version a chance, but it was just bad. Matthew Broedrick is in my opinion a very good actor, but I am sorry, he is NO Professor Harold Hill. I mean, not even remotely close or belivable. This movie was a train wreck just waiting to happen, and I think it did. Please don't see this if you haven't already, it will just make you cry.

Wow, apparently this is my night to just go off about things that bug me. So as long as I am on that train of thought...here are my list of films I reccommend you all avoid if you haven't tragically seen them already:

City of Industry
The Four Feathers
Real Women Have Curves
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever
The Emperor's Club
A Beautiful Mind
The Royal Tennebaums

I know there are more films, but I just was pulling those off of my list from Netflix.

Okay, postive movie note, here are some films I have seen that I liked:

All About Eve
Auntie Mame
Broadway Melody of 1940
The Road to Bali (Great pair Bob Hope and Bing Crosby)
Mask of Zorro (believe or not, actually a good film)
Spy Kids and Spy Kids 2 (just plain fun)
Secretary

That's enough for tonight. Like always, I don't suggest that I am an expert on any of my topics of rant, but I am going to share them whether you like it or not. Please feel free to debate me whenever you feel like it.

Current mood: annoyed.
Current music: Anything coming from the movie "Three on a Match".

10th August, 2003. 3:08 pm. I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you in worn out shoes.....

:( Okay, I sad. I just read about the passing of a truly great man/performer. As I saw Liz also mentioned, Gregory Hines passed away yesterday. The world truly has lost a great. I know I am going to have to tell Rae today, and that makes me sad, because I know she also appreciated him. Btw, the quote at the top of my post was supposed to reference the fact that Hines played Bojangles in an biographical tv movie.

On that note, I am assuming most of you have noticed that I quote songs for intros to my posts. Hokey I know, but that's me.

I was going to come on here and rant about my crappy day at work, but I am still very bummed about this whole Gregory Hines thing. Once I feel better, maybe I will rant.

30th July, 2003. 10:07 pm. A Person, could develop a cold.....

And I did, and I am so not happy about it. The cold has just gotten worse and now my whole body just aches!!!! UGH!!!!

Okay, time for my rant of the evening. I love my friends and usually value their movie watching advice, but I have to say, if I never ever watch A Beautiful Mind again for the rest of my life, it will probably be too soon. My apologies to everyone who thinks this is actually a good film, but I bloody well hated it. I was bored so senseless that I actually found the cat outside that was licking itself, more entertaining (as did Rae). I will probably rant on this more later as I need some forum to bitch.

So then, i follow up with "Real Women Have Curves", which is supposed to be a Comedy, which if that is the case I am scared, as I only laughed twice in a total of 86 minutes of film time. This wasn't a horrid film, but it was far from a good film, or a comedy.

Okay, enough griping for now, I once again should be sleeping as I have canoe officialing to be doing again in the morning.

Current mood: sick.
Current music: bad asian soap opera.

30th July, 2003. 1:07 pm. Well isn't it IRONIC....don't ya think?

" A little too ironic, and yes I really do think....."

So here I am, sick, and headed home from work, not but 10 minutes ago, and I am driving up Disneyland Drive, towards the 5 freeway. I see the Anaheim Police (the ones that policeing around Downtown Disney) pulling out of DD, and headed onto Disneyland Drive. There I am, with expired reg. worried that they are going to pull behind me and ticket me. So there I am, on Disneyland Drive, stopped at the light at Ball, breathing a sigh of relief as I watch the cop car, pull into the Right turn lane, when I realize, they are probably in a rush to get back to the office so they can head home. So here we all are, waiting at the red light, when the cops, opt to make the R turn onto Ball. And then It happens! BAM! Cop car whacks an old man on a Blue bike. Bike get's lodged under the front tire of the cop car and the guy instantly jumps to his feet, rather panicked, but apparently okay. Next, out jump the two cops from the cop car, to instantly offer assistance. It's then that I realize the true irony in the situation...as I notice the two bikes attached to the back of the cop car, and the two cops, in bike shorts and usual bike cop attire! What a scene.

And here I thought I was going to have nothing interesting to add to my journal except that I woke up today to find I was fucking sick. Me no like this! I feel like crap, my voice is shot, and to add to it, my boss kept making fun of me every time my voice cracked today.

Other than that, did the Canoe Official thing this morning, though I mainly just laid on the ground behind Robyn and Kim while they watched the River, god was I tired! No DQs today. Did get to see the Indian Shaman without his facial skin and stuff though....ewwwwwww.

Will write more after my nap, probably around the time where I will have to go fix my girlfriend's vehicle.

29th July, 2003. 11:20 pm. Well, here I am.....

"her name was Ashley, she was a Server, but that was thirty minutes ago now she's playing the piano...." Okay, well not really, more like playing a keyboard and filling it with letters and words to share with myself and I guess my friends. :)

So, here I am. I am thinking this might be a good thing for me as I will now have a forum in which to babble about the goingon's in my life.

That said, my life has lots of things to chat about, however, it's 11:22 at night and I have to be out at Indian Village in about 6 hours to watch canoes. When I get home from work tomorrow, I will revisit the computer and see what I can write into this crazy little journal.

PS. Do I know anybody else out in Live Journal land?
